These 2 auto icons have been competing against one another since the days of bell bottoms. While the Accord has positioned itself as the mid-size automobile for every person, the Passat has moved more towards a high-end automobile (but with a non-luxury automobile price). Volkswagen is presenting an all-new Passat for 2020, improving on the successes of the old version while also upgrading various other places of need. Can the current Accord (which was introduced a couple of years ago) take on the brand-new Passat? Let’s find out.
The ’20 Volkswagen Passat is outfitted with only one powertrain option, a 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder that is mated to a standard 6-speed auto. This pairing generates 174 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, and while the certified facts and figures are not yet known it is expected to get a minimum of 36 miles per gallon on the highway. The Accord begins with a smaller sized 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder and a CVT yet can be updated to a Hybrid or Sport trim. The Sport trim can create up to 252 horsepower and be equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. It may be quicker yet you shed fuel efficiency, falling to 32mpg on the freeway.
Definitely, style is subjective, but we cannot help but ogle the new Passat. The standard 17-inch alloy wheels and complete LED lights make you take notice this isn’t some boring economy car. Step inside and you’ll immediately observe lots of leg room (back AND front), lots of USB charging ports, available keyless entry with push-button starting, and a 6.3-inch touchscreen stereo. The Honda also features 17-inch wheels and LED lighting, but the outside styling isn’t nearly as crisp. The ‘face’ appears like it has melted and moved down even more than desired and overall, it’s very blob-like. The all-new Passat wins the style section, hands down.
Both automobiles come with remarkable touch screen stereos, however while Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Sirius XM are complementary on the Passat they call for a greater trim level to get them on the Honda. Every ’20 Passat will get a blind-spot monitor, rear traffic alert, front traffic assist with pedestrian monitoring, and autonomous emergency braking. Optional technology features consist of adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and parking steering assist. The Honda does include most of the exact same driver-assist tech with the major distinction being that the Blind Spot Information System and Head-Up Display are available as options that cost more money. Ultimately, whichever automobile you pick will be incredibly safe.
