The 1st of many symptoms of faulty gas caps is probably going to be a gas cap that won’t tighten completely or a loose gas cap. This might not seem significant right away, but if it’s not fully sealed then the entire fuel system can be exposed to dirt and grime. If the gas cap is not fitting properly, try checking the rubber seal to make sure it isn’t brittle or missing. If you have an older car, be sure the metal gas cap isn’t damaged or bent. Both a bad seal or bent gas cap can cause gas cap problems and might even require a replacement from the manufacturer.
What problems can an ill-fitting gas cap cause? How about a check engine light? A loose gas cap will not only let in grime and dirt, but it can allow fuel vapors to escape the fuel tank. These gasoline vapors can cause an error in the emissions system, which would light up the check engine light. Dirt and Grime that seeps into the gas tank could also contaminate the injectors. The smell is the gas evaporating from the fuel tank, which causes poor fuel economy.
