June Marks Another Volkswagen Sales Gain

Volkswagen of America reported June sales of 27,377 vehicles in the United States, for a 15 percent gain over June 2016 results. Year to date, 161,238 Volkswagen vehicles have been sold in the United States for an increase of 8.2 percent.

The Golf family of vehicles continued to drive the brand's performance, as they totaled a sales gain of 27.7 percent on 5,880 vehicles sold in June. Total Golf sales for 2017 have grown 45.3 percent with 38,247 vehicles sold, with the Golf SportWagen delivering a June increase of 139.6 percent and a year-to-date increase of 200.7 percent.

The Beetle Coupe sales were up 39.2 percent, while the Beetle Convertible gained 49.2 percent. In total, the Beetle has enjoyed a year-to-date sales increase of 30.2 percent on 8,821 vehicles sold.

The Volkswagen Jetta saw sales increase 16.0 percent on sales of 9,999 vehicles, while the Touareg gained 51.4 percent in June.

June celebrated the Volkswagen Atlas SUV's first full month of sales, with customers receiving 2,413 of the Chattanooga, TN-built vehicle.

Volkswagen Jetta Receives a Place on the KBB.com "10 Coolest Cars of 2017" List

Last month, Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com announced the vehicles they deemed to be the 10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000 -- and we're pleased by the fact that the Volkswagen Jetta made the list. Kelley Blue Book's list has been published every year since 2003, making this the publication's longest running honor.

In a press release, Hendrik Muth, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing and Strategy, Volkswagen of America, Inc., noted," Volkswagen is honored to receive this award from Kelley Blue Book. The Jetta represents the heart and soul of Volkswagen, with its sporty driving dynamics and high-quality workmanship."

In that same press release, Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com, said, "The most affordable European sedan on the market combines the uniquely satisfying driving manners and rich interior sensibilities that help define and distinguish its pricier, luxury-badged brethren."

Kelley Blue Book editors emphasized the need for cars to be both fun to drive and own when they selected the vehicles that earned a place on the list. It's also noteworthy that vehicle on the list has a starting purchase price of $18,000 or less, as calculated by Kelley Blue Book's exclusive Fair Purchase Price tool, making them affordable to most drivers.

Standard features on the 2017 Jetta sedan include a sunroof, push-button start, KESSY^® keyless access, Climatronic® dual-zone climate control and rain-sensing wipers. Volkswagen Enjoys Positive May Sales

Earlier this month, Volkswagen of America declared that the company sold 30,014 vehicles in May 2017 -- an increase of 4.3 percent compared to May 2016 sales. Over the year's first five months, 133,861 Volkswagen vehicles were sold in the United States, delivering a 6.9 percent increase in year-over-year sales.

The month's results showed continued demand for the Golf, Jetta and Beetle families of Volkswagen vehicles. The Golf SportWagen earned a significant sales increase of 243.9 percent over May 2016 sales, while sales for the e-Golf jumped 41.6 percent and Golf sales improved 26.5 percent. Combined, Golf vehicle sales increased 61.0 percent for May.

The Jetta sedan registered 11,535 vehicles sold in May 2017, marking a 5.4 percent improvement over May 2016. Beetle coupe sales jumped 71.2 percent while Beetle convertible sales increased 39.4 percent, leading the entire Beetle family to a 55.3 percent gain compared to May 2016 sales.

So far in 2017, total Golf sales have increased 49.0 percent, total Beetle sales have grown 27.6 percent and Passat sedan sales have improved 11.4 percent.

The completely new Atlas SUV, which is built in Chattanooga, TN, made its sales debut in May, with 1,610 vehicles delivered to customers.

e-Golf Receives Top Green Compact Car Honor

Last month, the 2017 AAA Green Car Guide named the Volkswagen e-Golf the Top Green Vehicle in the Compact Car category. The e-Golf earned the highest score among 21 competing compact cars, as vehicles were assessed on 13 different attributes, including ride quality, interior noise, visibility, EPA emissions and slalom handling.

The newest e-Golf model features improvements in range, fuel economy and power. A new lithium-ion battery boasts an increased energy capacity of 35.8 kWh, extending the vehicle's range to an EPA-estimated 125 miles on a single charge. Better battery chemistry leads to better fuel economy of an EPA-estimated combined 119 MPGe city/highway. The newly-upgraded electric motor creates 134 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque, helping the e-Golf achieve its best-ever top speed and 0-60 mph time.

Volkswagen Sees Positive April Sales Results

Volkswagen of America announced earlier this week that the company sold 27,557 vehicles in April, establishing a 1.6 percent improvement over April 2016 results. To date, Volkswagen has booked a 7.7 percent 2017 sales growth over last year, as 103,847 vehicles were sold in the first four months of the year.

The Golf family of vehicles continues to propel sales growth, with the 7,187 vehicles sold in April marking a 40.7 percent bump over last year. The 3,562 Golf SportWagen vehicles sold accounted for a stellar 252 percent jump in sales, and the 1,249 Golf models sold delivered a gain of 13.1 percent.

Combined, the Beetle Coupe and Beetle Convertible registered a 27.8 percent gain over April 2016 with sales of 1,497 vehicles, while the Chattanooga, TN built Passat booked 6,148 vehicles sold to tally a 9.2 percent increase.

In April, Volkswagen announced that the 2018 Atlas and 2018 Tiguan SUVs will come with a 6-year/72,000-mile bumper-to-bumper new vehicle limited warranty that is transferable beyond the initial owner -- making this the best bumper-to-bumper SUV transferable warranty offered in the United States.

Volkswagen March Sales Are Up

Volkswagen of America announced recently that the company sold 27,635 vehicles in March 2017, realizing a 2.7 percent sales growth over March 2016 numbers. To date, Volkswagen has sold 76,290 vehicles in 2017, which is a 10.1 percent year-over-year sales gain.

The month's results were fueled by the Golf family of vehicles, which sold a total of 6,369 vehicles in March for a 41.7 percent jump. The Golf SportWagen, which includes the all-new Alltrack trim, delivered 2,461 of the sales -- leading to a significant 154.2 percent increase over March 2016 results and delivering the model's best March results on record. The Golf GTI, Golf R and e-Golf models also registered best-ever March sales performances, enjoying a wave of success that began In February.

The Passat, which is built in Chattanooga, TN, saw sales rise 2.8 percent in the month on sales of 6,266 vehicles. The Beetle family of vehicles saw sales grow 1.9 percent, as a combined 1,497 vehicles were sold in March.

The all-new and first-ever 2018 Volkswagen Atlas has been making headlines ever since its debut, but we have even better news, friends! It’s arriving soon at our dealership, and others around the country. To mark this occasion, our preferred automaker recently debuted a new advertisement for it called “Luv Bug.” Although it centers on the Atlas, it also features other beloved models.

The video kicks off with the couple trading in their trusty Beetle for something with a little more space—a Jetta. The Volkswagen Arteon is a Worthy Successor to the CC

Those who opt for the CC aren’t your run-of-the-mill midsize sedan buyers. They’re looking for a niche product—a car that bears the basic foundation of a midsize car, but more premium zest. While the CC was that option for many, the time has come for it to be put to pasture and usher in its insanely-good looking replacement: the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon.

Previewed by the Sport Coupe Concept GTE in 2015, the all-new Arteon doesn’t just cribble bits of the prototype, but builds on—and in some cases, even out does it. For example, take a look at the front fascia. The headlamps flow into the slatted grille seamlessly, and the lower air intakes and fog light housing is decidedly more aggressive than the concept. Did we mention that the Arteon is also a hatchback?

That will certainly add a needed dose of practicality, for certain. As for the interior, Volkswagen has gone the upscale-but-restrained route. Tech “bling” is offered in the form of VW Digital Cockpit and your choice in infotainment screen size. For power, we’re still waiting on the official word on which of the Arteon’s six available powertrains we’re getting. Our best guess is that the ones offering 148 hp and 276 hp are the most likely.

In Some Easy Steps You Can Change Your Wiper Fluid

Everyone in San Diego can say they know a little bit about being under the hood of their vehicle, especially after we tell you one way everyone can do their own bit of maintenance. It's changing your wiper fluid, and truly anyone could do it, as it only takes a bit of effort, and is simple!

Open up the hood of your vehicle, and find the washer fluid reservoir, which is the white and transparent container that has a windshield or water symbol on the cap
If you have a rear wiper, there might be a separate reservoir that you can use as well
Remove the caps and check the fluid level of each one. If it's full, you don't need to add any more
If you see that fluid is low, be sure to carefully pour it into the reservoir until it almost reaches the top
Put the caps back on tightly, and close the hood

Get a Handle on the Squealing Noises from Your Vehicle

At Volkswagen of Kearney Mesa, we all want to have smooth driving that is noise free here in San Diego. If you start hearing squealing noises in your vehicle it could be many different things, and we want you to know what they might be before you bring it in to our service department to have it checked out.

If it squeals while you turn the steering wheel, it could be low power-steering fluid. It's what lubricates the steering, and the noise can persist if the steering remains off-center. Checking the fluid could be a solution.
Squeals while turning could also be a suspension issue, like shocks, tie-rod ends, seals, ball joints, or universal joints that are in need of lubrication.
There also could be something rubbing up against the interior trim of the vehicle, which a service center can check out for you.
If you hear your vehicle squeal while accelerating, it could be related to your belt. In this case, you'd probably hear it while the vehicle is idle, too, or just turned on in colder weather. That means its worn or loose, and getting it fixed or replaced is always a good idea.
Worn alternator bearings could also be a culprit, and in that case you will likely need them to be replaced, too.
If you hear the squealing noises when you apply the brakes, that could mean many things. In wet weather, it might just be when applied to wet wheels, but if it is dry and they are squealing, it might be time for a brake pad change.

Get a Handle on Your Service Light Knowledge

When people see a service light go off in their vehicle, they panic. It does mean that something requires you attention, but knowing what everything means is half battle too. That's why we’ve put together a list of most common service lights, so when you bring it in to our service center, you'll have an idea of what needs checking.

Check engine light: This is the light that looks like an engine. When it comes on, you should make sure you stop in to a service center as soon as you can, as it could be a variety of issues, ranging from a loose gas cap to replacement of spark plugs, catalytic converter, and oxygen sensor.
Reduced power warning: This also looks like an engine, but has a downward arrow in the middle of it. With this, it's indicating that your engine computer has limited power output. Again, stopping into a service center right away is the best course of action.
Tire pressure monitoring system: This warning light is an exclamation point inside a tire, which is shape more like a horseshoe. It's pretty straightforward, the tire pressure in one of your tires is low, and needs to be brought back to optimal levels. You can do it by putting air in your tires with a gauge if you're comfortable with that, or again, seek out a service professional.
Brake system: This light is an exclamation point in a circle with two brackets around it. It could mean that your parking brake is on while you're driving and you need to move it to the off position, or it could mean that the braking system or brake fluid is low, or your ABS has an issue. Check your parking brake first, and if the light is still on, seek out a professional diagnosis.
Oil pressure warning: This is an oil can light, and when it stays lit, that means you have a loss of oil pressure, and you should immediately check your oil level and pressure.

Some Bumper Sticker Removal Tips for San Diego Drivers

Here in San Diego, you won't go far without seeing a car with a bumper sticker on it. It is your way of being able to express yourself on the go. But, for some of us, after a while we want to remove a few bumper stickers, and there's a right way to do it, which helps avoid leaving any mess, and keeping your bumper or window in pristine condition. It's why we've put those steps together for you to utilize when you go to remove a bumper sticker.

With a sticker on a bumper, wash the surface where the sticker is located
Use a hair dryer on the hot setting to soften the adhesive, working from the center outward toward the edges
Take a clastic card, and at an angle on the edge, gently scrape the sticker loose using a sawing motion if necessary
If the sticker is not coming off right away, go back to using the hair dryer to further soften it up
Once you've removed the sticker, wash the surface again, and use the heat from the hair dryer to get off any residue
You can also use some bug and tar remover to help get off the rest
With some detailing spray, cover the area where the sticker was, and use a cotton or microfiber cloth to wipe it off and finish it
When trying to take a sticker off the window, you can also use the hair dryer method, but even using a razor blade scraper will work as the glass will be able to withstand it
Once you have the sticker off the glass, use some class cleaner to get the rest of the residue off

Tips for How to Prep When Heading North to Winter Weather

We live in San Diego because we love the sunshine and good vibes. We drive Volkswagen vehicles for those same good vibes. But, being prepared in anything is key, even if it's something we don't see often. For the northern parts and higher elevations in the state, we're starting to see some snow, and being prepped for winter is always a good thing, especially if you are heading there on vacation.

Checking your lights all around the vehicle, from the headlights to fog lights and taillights is important because this obviously if going to help improve visibility and safety in bad weather
You also want to make sure your battery levels are good, and if it's running low, consider getting a new one, because you want your vehicle to be able to start every time in the cold
We also recommend keeping your vehicle in a garage if you can, as that keeps the battery warm. There are also battery warmers you can get that do the same thing
Check your coolant and anti-freeze levels and ensure they are good, because that's going to help when it comes to starting the vehicle after a long period outside in the cold
You should also check your washer fluid levels to ensure there is enough, and it doesn't freeze over
Always keeping plenty of gas in your fuel tank is also important, as it helps heat your vehicle
Where there's lots of snow you should own a set of winter tires, which give you added grip and traction and much more confidence
Make sure your defrosters work, because you'll need them on those cold days to get ice and snow off your car
Keep a survival and first aid kit with you in the trunk or somewhere convenient. Include items like water, blankets, and a flashlight so you're covered in case of an emergency

You can do that with ease, using the simple penny test, which has been a tried and true test of seeing if you need a new set of tires.

Take a penny and put it in between the tread of your tires with Abraham Lincoln's head going down toward the tread
If Lincoln's head disappears, that means your tread is good, and you are fine
If you are able to see all of Lincoln's head, that means you are in need or some new tires

Lift up the hood and look for the dipstick, it's usually a different color and easy to spot
Take out the dipstick, and wipe it down with a towel, removing any oil on it
Insert the dipstick back in the oil chamber, then take it out again
Look at the tip of the dipstick and the two measurements, which are lines or small holes usually
If the oil is close to the higher hole or line, that means you've got fresh, full oil
If it's at the bottom hole, that means you should replace the oil
If you need just a bit of oil, you can top it off yourself, but follow your vehicle's owner's manual
For low oil, make sure you come in to our service center and we can perform an oil change for you and make sure everything is functioning properly

Here in San Diego, we are fortunate there's lots of sunshine. However, on the days it might rain, and rain significantly, we do need to be prepared and know what to do. That's why at Volkswagen of Kearny Mesa, we have some tips on how to drive safely in rainy weather.

If you can, try and avoid driving in heavy rain, and be sure to check local forecasts and any warnings from the National Weather Service
When you drive slower and keep your distance, you'll have more control over your vehicle
Make sure your headlights are on, but not your high beams, which can distract you, or other drivers
Use your defrosters to keep out fog, and set the air conditioning to the fresh air setting on your vehicle
Remember that the start of the storm is when it can be most dangerous and slippery, as the water mixes with oils on the road
Make sure you don't hydroplane, which is when your vehicle loses contact with the road, and feels like it is floating. If this happens, keep calm, take your foot off the gas, and steer in a safe direction
You can avoid hydroplaning by slowing down, turning off cruise control, and avoiding sudden turning or braking
You're more likely to hydroplane on non-grooved asphalt roads, especially where there are tire ruts worn in, so be mindful of what type of road you are driving on, too
Any puddle could be a pothole, so approach them all with caution
Always avoid flooding roads, or roads with moving water, because that can cause many issues. It can damage your vehicle's electrical system, or engine, and remember, one foot of water can float some vehicles, and two feet of water can sweep vehicles away - including trucks and SUVs
If it ever gets too bad, find higher, safe ground, and wait out the storm

Those of us who want to ensure our vehicle is able to last and drive many fun miles know that routine auto service is the way to go. There are many ways to keep the ride smooth, and among them are wheel balance and wheel alignments, because they keep the wheels on track so they aren't jerking you in another direction. To know the difference between both, and when you should have them done, we've put together a short explanation for each.

What is a wheel balance?

A wheel balance adjusts proper balance of the wheels
When your wheels aren't balanced it causes tread wear and the distribution of weight around the tire to change, which can lead to imbalance, causing the vehicle to shake or vibrate
Wheel balance service uses a calibrated spin balancer, and will test it at moving and non-moving to make sure your wheels are balanced, if they are not, they are adjusted
Most wheel balancing is recommended every 5,000 to 6,000 miles, or every six months

What is a wheel alignment?

A wheel alignment will adjust the angle of your car's wheels to the position that is set by the manufacturer's recommended specification
The inspection includes looking at the toe, chamber, and caster, which are the three components that measure wheel alignment. If adjustments are needed, they are made
If you notice any pulling of the vehicle to one side or your vehicle has recently been in a collision, you should get a wheel alignment
We also recommend a wheel alignment every 5,000 to 6,000 miles, especially if you drive through pot holes, gravel road, or in many different road conditions

Keep Your VW Cool in San Diego with these Car Tips

When you have to get in your car after it's been sitting in the heat, the one thing you want to do is get it cooled down, ASAP. Well, we certainly get it, and lucky for us, air conditioning in vehicles is there, even with dual-zone climate control on many new Volkswagen vehicles. But, cooling down quick is simple by following these steps.

You should check a few things regularly, and that includes the air conditioning suction vents, which are under the hood, and at the base of the windshield. Clean them out from any debris or anything that has piled up in there so you get the best flow
Ensure your cabin filter is clean, and if you need a new one, we're certainly here to help you get one inside your vehicle
Check your coolant levels to make sure everything is in order, and only check when your vehicle is cold
Use a reflective windshield screen when your vehicle is parked. This keeps out the sun and can keep the cabin a few degrees cooler, which is a plus
When you start your vehicle, roll down all of the windows
Turn on the air conditioning with the fresh air setting coming from the vents
When you have the air blowing consistently, roll up the front windows and switch to the recirculated air, which will let the cool air coming out of the front vents going right back into the air conditioning, allowing it to cool more
Shortly after rolling up the front windows, roll up the rest of the windows, and reduce blower speed to 50 percent or less, as your air conditioning will blow out colder air when less air is being pushed out
